Southampton Spitfires were founded in 2001, and began as an inline hockey club
at the University of Southampton. Since the founding of the Spitfires
the club has gone from strength to strength, competing in a range of
leagues and winning many trophies.
In 2006 the
Spitfires began their ice hockey legacy, entering into the British
Universities Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA), competing in division 2,
and despite being newcomers to the competition the Spitfires were
fighting for top place in the southern conference. The next season saw
the Spitfires step up to division one, and have gone from strength to
strength culminating the winning the 2011 BUIHA nationals at Ice
Sheffield.
Whilst the ice
hockey was flourishing, the inline hockey was also reaping the rewards
of hard training and years of experience, winning the 2004, 2006, 2007 and
2010 British Universities Inline Hockey Championship, adding to the
Spitfires trophy cabinet, making the Spitfires the most sucessful
Inline/Ice hockey club to date.
